How to Beat Shuten Doji in Onimusha: Way of the Sword
Prepare for Shuten Doji’s healing, delayed sword swings, fire attacks and flying head, with Oni Bow counters and Oni Awakening guidance.
Quick answer
Shuten Doji is fought in The Demon on the Mount. Watch his drinking animation, keep the Oni Bow available for fire-related interruptions, and avoid treating his staggered movements as safe openings. In the later body-and-head fight, watch both attackers.
Story and boss-mechanic spoilers below. The cited guides describe launch encounters, including Carnage; this is not a newly measured damage or timing test.
Before entering the fight
Fire resistance is useful against his fire attacks. Keep enough distance to see a complete animation and practise the difference between a weapon strike and a body attack before attempting tight Issen counters.
For fundamentals, use the Issen guide. If your healing setup needs work, check Hozuki Pouches before the encounter.
What to do when he drinks
Vandal's walkthrough describes drinking as a health-and-stamina recovery action. Hitting him during the standing drink can make him drop the gourd, but he can then jump onto it and cause an explosion. Interrupting the drink is therefore followed by an evasive step, not a long stationary combo.
PowerPyx also warns that long gaps in pressure give him time to recover. Neither observation supplies a guaranteed damage threshold that permanently disables healing.
Read the body before committing
His missed kick can lead into a fall and spinning recovery; the fall itself is not necessarily a punish window. A sideways stumble can precede a fast sword strike. When the gourd pulls Musashi inward, prepare for the following sword action rather than repeatedly trying to run away.
These cues are drawn from the Vandal encounter guide. Use short attacks between sequences until you can recognize the recovery.
Fire attacks and the flying head
| Cue | Response described in the Carnage guide |
|---|---|
| Fire-breath wind-up | Use an Oni Bow shot to interrupt |
| Fire left on the ground | Move around it rather than following the boss straight through |
| Detached head alongside the body | Track the head while fighting the body |
| Head inflates before exploding | Interrupt with the Oni Bow |
| Oni Awakening becomes available | Use the transformation, then save the finisher until its gauge is nearly spent |
The PowerPyx Carnage guide is the source for these counters. Follow your platform's action prompts; button symbols from a PS5 recording are not universal controls.
Why do guides count the phases differently?
Some count the scripted transition separately, while others group the fight into its normal and transformed combat portions. Follow the event on screen rather than expecting every guide's phase number to match.
Tenkiei's recorded fight guide separates the normal portion at 0:00 and Genma portion at 2:45, with a full fight from 7:24. It is a useful reference for comparing a troublesome animation.
After Shuten Doji
Use the boss index to find the next opponent, or the Practice Grounds guide for replay access. Avoid carrying a strategy from this healing-focused fight into the final boss without checking its different mechanics.
