Onimusha: Way of the Sword Practice Grounds Guide
Find the Practice Grounds at Enma Hall, learn which combat drills help with Issen and Reflex practice, and understand Boss Rematch for trophy cleanup.
Quick answer
The Practice Grounds are accessed from Enma's Hall at Rokudo-chinnoji Temple after the feature becomes available through story progress. Current launch guides place that unlock during The Oni's Apprentice. Use the bell in the hall to enter the training area, then speak with Takamura to choose an available drill or Boss Rematch option. The Practice Grounds are especially useful for learning Issen timing, Chain Issen, Reflex Combo and other combat systems without depending on a normal story encounter.
Checked September 12, 2026 against current launch guides and official combat material. Drill availability changes with story and skill progress. If an option named below is missing in your game, continue the story or unlock the related ability instead of assuming the menu is broken.
Where are the Practice Grounds?
The Practice Grounds are tied to Enma's Hall, the hub area at Rokudo-chinnoji Temple. Launch guide coverage describes entering the training area by using the bell in the hall once the feature has been introduced. Takamura manages the practice menu inside.
If you reach Enma's Hall and cannot enter the Practice Grounds yet, keep progressing the main story. Current guide evidence places the introduction during The Oni's Apprentice, but this page does not treat every later drill as available immediately at that moment. Some drills depend on abilities, Oni Armaments or other progression systems that unlock separately.
For a spoiler-light route through the early combat systems, start with the beginner guide.
What can you practice?
The Practice Grounds provide repeatable combat drills rather than a single tutorial. Current trophy and launch-guide evidence documents drills associated with several important systems:
| Drill or system | What to use it for | Practical reason to return |
|---|---|---|
| Issen | Learn the just-before-impact attack timing | Build consistency before difficult encounters |
| Chain Issen | Practice the follow-up timing after a successful Issen | Learn the post-hit cue without relying on a crowded story fight |
| Reflex Combo | Practice timed evasions and the Reflex follow-up | Useful when Dodge timing is the problem |
| Blazing State | Practice the parry-driven offensive state | Learn how the state feels before trophy cleanup |
| Oni Armaments | Test unlocked supernatural weapons | Compare how different Armaments behave in a repeatable setup |
| Oni Awakening | Practice the transformed combat state | Learn the pressure window without spending a story encounter learning the basics |
| Oni Strength | Practice the Oni power used to break defenses | Useful for armor and shield-related cleanup |
This is not a claim that every drill is available from the first visit. The safe rule is simple: the Practice Grounds mirror systems you have actually reached or unlocked. If a guide tells you to select a drill that is missing, first verify story progress and the related skill.
Best way to practice Issen and Chain Issen
Issen is one of the best reasons to use the Practice Grounds because the mechanic depends on timing rather than a separate dedicated button. Official developer commentary describes the core idea as attacking just before the enemy hit connects, preserving the series' risk-and-reward timing.
Use a short repeatable routine:
- Enter the Issen drill and keep your distance consistent.
- Watch one readable attack instead of reacting to every animation at once.
- Press the current light or heavy attack action once near impact.
- If Musashi performs a normal attack, try slightly later on the next attempt.
- If Musashi takes the hit, try slightly earlier while keeping spacing the same.
- Once the first Issen is reliable, move to the Chain Issen drill and practice the follow-up after the successful slash cue.
Do not copy a button from another platform without checking your current preset or remapping. The technique is defined by the attack action and timing, not one universal controller label.
For the full timing breakdown, troubleshooting table and platform boundaries, use the Issen guide.
How Boss Rematch works
Current launch guides place Boss Rematch inside the Practice Grounds menu. After entering the training area, speak with Takamura and choose Boss Rematch when that option is available. The menu lets you revisit unlocked boss encounters and select from the difficulties currently offered for that opponent.
Boss Rematch matters most for completion players because the trophy route includes Second Helping for defeating one Rematch opponent and Glutton for Punishment for clearing the required Rematch opponents across the required difficulties. Current PowerPyx testing reports that clearing the highest available difficulty for an opponent can also mark lower difficulties complete, but this is guide-observed behavior rather than a permanent official rule. Check your own completion marks after each clear.
Boss Rematch is not the same thing as Chapter Select. If your goal is full Platinum planning, use the trophy guide and roadmap rather than assuming the Practice Grounds can replay every story objective or collectible route.
Using drills for trophy cleanup
Repeatable drills can reduce the amount of random combat grinding needed for cumulative trophies. Launch guides specifically point players back to the Practice Grounds for counters tied to Issen, Chain Issen, Reflex Combo, Blazing State, Oni Armaments, Oni Awakening and defense-breaking abilities.
That does not mean every trophy should be postponed until the end. A more efficient route is:
- Build Issen, Chain Issen and Reflex repetitions naturally during the story.
- Use Oni Armaments regularly instead of saving a full gauge forever.
- Track guard breaks, armor breaks and other combat counters while progressing.
- Return to the matching drill only for counters that remain incomplete.
For Coming Through!, the requirement is to break enemy guard 50 times. A guard break means depleting the enemy stamina or guard state until it breaks; it is not simply landing 50 ordinary hits. For the full list of combat-counter trophies, see the Platinum roadmap.
What if a drill or Boss Rematch is missing?
Do not assume a missing option is a bug. Check these conditions first:
- Story progress: the Practice Grounds themselves are introduced through progression.
- Skill unlocks: a drill for an ability may not make sense before that ability is available.
- Oni Armaments: weapon-specific training depends on the Armament you have obtained.
- Boss progress: Rematch choices depend on fights you have actually reached and the menu state available to your save.
- New Game Plus state: some completion work belongs later in the Platinum route rather than the first visit to the hall.
If you are preparing for Carnage or checking what carries into another run, use the New Game Plus guide.
A simple 10-minute practice plan
A short session is more useful than repeatedly switching techniques without learning the timing. Try this sequence when the corresponding drills are available:
- Spend a few attempts on Block or Parry rhythm so you can read the incoming strike.
- Practice basic Issen until you can identify whether your misses are early or late.
- Run Chain Issen only after the first counter feels predictable.
- Use the Reflex Combo drill to separate Dodge timing from Issen timing.
- Finish with one Oni Armament or Oni Strength drill so you remember when a supernatural tool is better than forcing another sword counter.
The goal is not to memorize a universal frame count. It is to make each response recognizable: Parry for a timed guard, Deflect for stamina pressure, Dodge for attacks that demand movement, and Issen when you are confident enough to accept the tighter risk window.

Is Boss Rematch in the Practice Grounds?
Yes. Current launch guides document Boss Rematch as a Practice Grounds option managed through Takamura after the feature is available.
Does Boss Rematch replace Chapter Select?
No. Treat Boss Rematch as repeatable boss combat, not as a general story chapter or collectible replay system.
