Onimusha: Way of the Sword Mods and REFramework

Find the original REFramework project, understand game-build compatibility, and plan safe backups, installation checks and mod removal on PC.

Does Onimusha support REFramework?

Praydog's REFramework repository lists Onimusha: Way of the Sword among its supported games. It is a third-party modding framework, not a Capcom patch or a promise that every script works with every game update. Start at the author's GitHub repository, not a repackaged download advertisement.

This guide covers source verification and a reversible Windows PC workflow. Checked October 22, 2026; we have not installed or compatibility-tested a particular release. It is not a console mod guide, an endorsement of trainers, or a verified VR setup.

Framework, mod and Cheat Engine are different

TermWhat to check before using it
REFrameworkThe loader build and whether it supports your exact game version
A script or mod using the frameworkIts own author, requirements, install location and uninstall instructions
Cheat Engine table or trainerSeparate software and provenance; framework support does not validate it
Official DLCStore ownership and game requirements, not a third-party loader

We do not maintain a verified Cheat Engine table or trainer download here. A search result calling something “safe” or “latest” is not a compatibility test. For official cosmetic purchases, use the outfits and sword appearances guide.

Before installing anything

  1. Confirm the unmodified game works. If it already crashes, start with PC troubleshooting.
  2. Record the game build, store, Windows and GPU driver versions. Keep a note of any existing loader or injector.
  3. Back up saves independently and preserve settings you may change. Do not use your only completion save to test a gameplay-altering script.
  4. Read the individual mod's supported versions, dependencies and known issues. A demo release is not evidence of full-game compatibility.
  5. Keep a file list for every addition. If an archive would replace an existing file, stop and identify who owns it before proceeding.

These are precautions, not a guarantee that third-party software cannot damage a save or conflict with another tool. Decline a download that asks you to disable protection, install an unrelated browser extension or enter a store password.

Author-documented REFramework installation

The repository links its stable releases and separate nightly developer builds. For non-VR installation, its README says to extract only dinput8.dll from the archive into the game folder. Use the store client's installed-files browser to locate your own installation instead of copying a path from another game.

Do not overwrite an existing DLL without identifying it. If you already use another injector, resolve the compatibility question through the authors' documentation first. A newer nightly is not automatically more stable for your setup.

After installing the framework alone, test a launch before adding any scripts. Then follow each mod author's instructions separately and test one addition at a time. This isolates conflicts and makes rollback understandable; it is not a promise that a particular mod will work.

Compatibility and startup problems

The author's issue tracker contains an Onimusha startup-crash report identifying nightly 01415, and a separate Proton/Wine startup-deadlock report. These are version- and environment-specific reports, not proof that all releases are broken or that a current fix exists.

If an update changes behavior, record both versions and compare an unmodified launch. A framework supporting the game does not validate every plugin, VR feature, Steam Deck configuration or graphics injector. Keep Windows advice separate from Proton-specific instructions.

How to plan removal and rollback

  1. Close the game before changing its files.
  2. Follow each mod's removal instructions, starting with the most recent addition. Move files to a clearly named backup outside the game folder rather than deleting unrelated folders.
  3. To stop loading the framework, move out the dinput8.dll that you added for REFramework, retaining a copy. Never remove a Windows system DLL or a file whose origin you cannot identify.
  4. Check your installation notes for additional scripts or plugins. Disabling the loader does not undo earlier save changes.
  5. Test the unmodified game, then restore only a known-working configuration if you choose to continue modding.

Store file verification may repair original files but should not be treated as an inventory of third-party additions. If a modified save no longer behaves as expected, stop saving over it and consult the mod's documentation before using your independent backup.
