Onimusha: Way of the Sword Oni Gauntlet & Souls Guide
Learn how to absorb souls, what the launch-version soul colors do, how Oni Armaments charge, when enemies can steal souls and how to spend them.
Quick answer
Defeat or pressure Genma, then use the current Absorb Souls action to draw loose souls into Musashi's Oni Gauntlet. You can move while absorbing. In launch-version coverage, yellow souls restore health, red souls are used for upgrades, and blue souls charge Oni Armaments. Absorb before an enemy takes the souls, but do not ignore an incoming attack just to finish collecting them.
Checked September 9, 2026 against launch coverage and official previews. Physical buttons vary by platform, preset and remapping. Later-game gauges and boss-specific rewards add more color-coded effects, so the three basic uses below are not presented as a complete endgame formula.
Soul colors and their basic uses
| Soul | Verified launch use | Practical decision | Boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yellow | Restores health | Absorb when damaged and the route is safe | Exact recovery per soul is not published here |
| Red | Upgrade currency | Save for gear or abilities that support your current build | Prices and upgrade availability depend on progress |
| Blue | Charges Oni Armaments | Build charge before a difficult group or boss opening | Required charge and effect vary by Armament |
Some launch guides and late-game encounters also describe power or transformation-related soul rewards. Their labels and behavior are not generalized in this table because the checked evidence is encounter-specific and older preview coverage did not always use the same color mapping as release coverage.
How soul absorption works
- Damage or defeat a Genma so that souls appear in the arena.
- Create enough space to avoid the next attack.
- Hold or use the Absorb Souls action shown by your current control layout.
- Move while drawing the souls in; the developers confirmed that movement during absorption was added for the faster combat system.
- Stop or defend if the next enemy attack is more dangerous than the remaining pickup.
The useful choice is not simply “absorb now” or “always wait.” Loose souls are a battlefield resource. Collect immediately when the arena is safe; delay briefly when an attack must be answered first; reposition while absorbing when you can maintain distance.
Can enemies take your souls?
Yes, in documented situations. Blocking drains stamina, and the Xbox launch guide warns that losing your stance can also cost a substantial amount of souls. The PlayStation final preview shows Daidara consuming souls left in the arena. Launch boss coverage also records enemies absorbing souls to enter stronger states.
Use these rules when souls are contested:
- Do not turtle behind Block until the stamina gauge empties.
- Pull loose souls toward Musashi while moving away from the enemy's next line of attack.
- Prioritize survival over the final few souls if the absorb animation or route would expose you.
- If an enemy begins a clearly documented absorption mechanic, collect what you safely can before it powers up.
Not every Genma has been verified to steal souls, and there is no complete enemy-by-enemy theft table. Treat it as an encounter mechanic, not a universal timer attached to every soul drop.
How souls power Oni Armaments
Oni Armaments are supernatural weapons linked to the Gauntlet. Official previews show examples including the Oni Bow, The Two Celestials and Wind-Whipper. Blue souls charge their use in launch coverage; when the required gauge is ready, use the Oni Armament action shown by the current layout.
Armaments do more than deal raw damage. The Oni Bow can answer ranged enemies, trigger traps and interact with puzzle targets. Other Armaments create different combat openings. Their exact damage, charge cost and best matchup depend on the individual weapon and game state, so no universal “best Armament” is claimed here.
In early PS5 preview controls, an Oni Armament used R1. That is historical platform-specific evidence, not a promise that R1 is correct for Xbox, keyboard, Switch 2, alternate presets or remapped controls.
Souls, upgrades and progression
Capcom's final preview states that souls, together with discovered treasures, help upgrade gear and unlock abilities. Red souls are the launch-version upgrade currency described by current reviews and guides. Before spending:
- Read the exact node, gear or material requirement in the current menu.
- Choose an upgrade that supports a move you already use consistently.
- Keep a reserve if the next available node or material purchase is more useful than a small immediate improvement.
- Do not rely on a guide's fixed price unless it identifies the same platform, build and progression point.
Upgrade costs, shop inventory and balance can change. This page deliberately avoids publishing a permanent farming rate or a single mandatory build.
Soul choices during Break opportunities
Against a boss, depleting stamina can open a Break Issen with more than one target. The 2025 PlayStation hands-on documented a choice between attacking for major direct damage and selecting another point for souls that charge the Gauntlet and help recovery.
Read the reward shown in the current encounter:
- Choose direct damage when ending or shortening the dangerous phase matters most.
- Choose the resource target when health or Oni charge will create a safer next cycle.
- Do not assume every boss offers the same targets or reward quantities.
This decision connects the soul system to the wider defence loop: Parry and Deflect create pressure, depleted stamina creates the Break, and the Break can become either damage or resources.
A safe soul-and-Gauntlet combat loop
- Read the enemy with Block or movement rather than starting with a long attack string.
- Use Parry, Deflect, Dodge or Issen according to the attack.
- Create a stagger, Break or defeat.
- Absorb the released souls while repositioning.
- Spend yellow souls as recovery, retain red souls for progression, and use blue charge when an Oni Armament creates a meaningful opening.
- Re-enter sword range only after checking the next enemy action.
For the defensive actions that feed this loop, see the Issen combat guide. New players should start with the beginner guide.
Common soul-system mistakes
- Standing still to absorb. Movement during absorption is supported; use it to improve spacing.
- Breaking your own stamina behind Block. A stance break can cost souls as well as create danger.
- Spending every red soul immediately. A later ability or material purchase may solve a more important problem.
- Saving Oni Armaments forever. Charge has value only when the weapon is used to create damage, control or a puzzle solution.
- Assuming preview buttons are universal. Follow the current action label and control menu.
- Publishing fixed farm rates. Enemy state, route, difficulty, upgrades and patches can change a run, and no universal rate is verified.
Frequently asked questions
Can you absorb souls while moving?
Yes. The developers explicitly confirmed moving absorption for this game's faster combat.
What do yellow, red and blue souls do?
Launch coverage consistently reports yellow for health recovery, red for upgrades and blue for Oni Armament charge. Later systems can add other soul-related gauges and rewards.
Do souls disappear or get stolen?
Specific enemies and mechanics can consume or steal souls, and a broken stance can cost held souls. A universal disappearance timer for every drop has not been verified.
Should I absorb immediately?
Absorb promptly when safe, and move while doing it. Answer the incoming attack first if collecting would get Musashi hit.
Is the Oni Gauntlet only a soul collector?
No. It enables Oni powers and Armaments, supports progression, and is central to Musashi's story. Exact abilities expand with game progress.
