Onimusha: Way of the Sword Byakue Boss Guide
Beat Byakue by separating weapon swings from body attacks, draining stamina with Deflect, using the overhead Issen window and managing Break Issen rewards.
Quick answer
Against Byakue, Deflect the readable axe swings, dodge the charge, grab and body attacks, and use the slow overhead axe strike as the safest Issen attempt. Pressure the stamina gauge until Break Issen becomes available. Do not treat every red or movement-heavy attack as a parry check.
Which defense to use
| Byakue action | Safer response | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Horizontal or long axe swing | Parry while learning; Deflect when confident | Weapon timing is readable and stamina damage matters |
| Slow overhead axe strike | Issen opportunity or late Deflect | Large wind-up makes the hit easier to read |
| Sprinting charge / body bash | Dodge away from the path | It is a body attack rather than a normal weapon exchange |
| Grab | Dodge | Blocking does not solve the grab |
| Area attack | Leave the affected space | Greedy punishment risks trading into the area effect |
Reliable fight plan
- Spend the first attack string learning the axe rhythm with ordinary Parry.
- When the weapon timing is stable, switch to Deflect to drain more stamina.
- Keep enough room to recognize the charge and grab instead of standing inside Byakue's model.
- Attempt Issen on the most telegraphed overhead swing, not every fast transition.
- When the stamina gauge breaks, take the Break Issen immediately unless the alternate target is needed for recovery souls.
- Use Oni Armament damage after a safe opening; do not empty the gauge into an armored animation.
If the fight takes too long, the answer is usually cleaner stamina pressure rather than riskier health damage. Practice the final hit of a familiar axe string in the Practice Grounds before returning.
Byakue – Hundred Defilements encounter
The Underground Laboratory encounter adds arena pressure. Clear ordinary enemies while keeping Byakue in view, avoid igniting hazards against yourself, then use the arena objects for opening damage before returning to the normal defensive rhythm.
Destructoid's launch guide highlights the same core answers in this variant: avoid the dash, Deflect the long weapon swings and use the downward strike for a deliberate Issen attempt. The late area attacks punish players who remain close after a completed combo, so reset spacing instead of extending every punish.
Use Break Issen targets deliberately
Boss Break Issen can present a choice between stronger direct damage and a target that releases useful souls. If Hozuki is low, the resource target can be worth more than the immediate damage. If healing and gauges are healthy, choose the damaging target and shorten the fight.
Frequently asked questions
Can Byakue's charge be parried?
The reliable recommendation is to dodge the body charge and reserve Parry or Deflect for weapon swings.
What is the easiest Byakue Issen?
The slow overhead axe attack has the clearest wind-up in current launch guides and player testing.
Should I attack health or stamina?
Use safe health punishes, but prioritize stamina damage because Break Issen produces the largest controlled opening.
